About

At the risk of revealing my age , my earliest works -- as a grade school student -- were pencil and paper drawings of The Beatles performing…. Later -- in 7th grade art class in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania -- I recall my art teacher admiring a tempera painting of mine titled “City of Bridges” … Pittsburgh, with its three rivers, being that city of bridges. I spent at least three years taking art classes in high school, and an early version of my “Elbow Room” pasta sculpture (featured on awards page) was memorably exhibited in the display case outside the high school’s art classroom.

After moving on to college my only formal art education at the university level was an Art Appreciation class that I enrolled in as a college freshman. After graduation from college my “career” as an artist was put on hold for thirty years or so while working as a federal civil servant in the Washington, DC area.

After graduation from college my “career” as an artist was put on hold for thirty years or so while working as a federal civil servant in the Washington, DC area.

After retiring from the federal government I resumed my artistic endeavors -- primarily in the medium of oil on canvas -- with subject matter focusing mostly on landscapes, this interest in landscapes being undoubtedly linked to my college degree in geography … as well as an interest in hiking and the outdoors in general.

More recent landscapes have expanded beyond traditional oil on canvas … landscape paintings that incorporates fluorescent paint or small three dimensional elements. I also recently discovered the medium of wine on canvas … a medium in which at least one Italian artist has been working for a few years. One of my works in this medium of wine on canvas was selected for a show at a City of Gaithersburg gallery. Several other works employing this medium are in progress.

Other media that I have begun to experiment in could best be classified as “sculpture” … assembled sculpture. This includes three-dimensional works that incorporate remnants of trees and natural wood, or recyclable plastics and paper.
